Deadline:
We now accept submissions on an ongoing basis
For:
Volume 5 Issue 1
The
Awakenings Review is an annual literary journal published by The Awakenings
Project. The AR
reviews original poetry, short story, dramatic scenes, essays, photographs,
excerpts from larger works, and black-and-white cover art—all created by persons who
have had a personal experience with mental illness. Back issues of The Awakenings Review are available for
$16.00 plus $4.00 shipping and handling. A two-issue subscription for
individuals or families is $35.00 postpaid. A two-issue subscription for
libraries, educational institutions, and other organizations is $75.00 postpaid
for a U.S. subscriber. Canada and Mexico subscriptions are $95.00 (U.S.
funds) postpaid. Other foreign subscriptions are $115.00 (U.S. funds)
postpaid.
Review
At least two members of the AR editorial board review each submission.
If it is accepted, the work is sent to an outside reader who gives final
approval for publication. If it is not accepted, they may suggest that the
piece be revised and resubmitted. It is then returned to the creator with
comments and an invitation to resubmit. Due to the number of submissions we
receive, there is a definite possibility that your work will not be published. Leave at
least six months to hear from us. It sometimes takes longer. (We are a skeleton crew
of all volunteers).
Number of Submissions
Individuals may submit up to five
pieces of poetry, or the equivalent of one short story, per issue. If more is
submitted, the remaining works may be returned un-reviewed.
Original Copy
Do not send the AR the
original or sole copy of a submission. Reserve a copy. For black &
white photographs, send a 8" x 10" print and reserve the original negative in
your files. For other types of artwork, send an image on a 35 mm slide
with a description of size and media. The Awakenings Review does not accept responsibility for lost or
damaged submissions.
Computer disk
If your work is accepted, you will
be asked to send a copy on disk in IBM format, preferably in Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect, or better, to email a copy to AwakeningsReview@aol.com.
SASE
It is recommended that all work
submitted through the mail to the AR
be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope with the correct postage. A
SASE is required for your work to be returned.
How to submit
Initially, send your work to the above
address. Put your name, address, phone
number and email on each work. You will be notified that we have received your
work. Email submissions are not accepted.
Mental Health History
We urge you
to include a cover letter describing your experience with mental health, either
as a consumer, survivor, ex-patient, family member, or friend. This information is voluntary and its absence
will not necessarily preclude you from publication. However, if your work is accepted for publication,
we will ask you for a short biography where we would hope you could supply some
of this information. This is particularly important for special issues.
Original Work
Material must be offered for first publication. We do not accept
previously published work. Simultaneous submissions are okay.
Remuneration
Contributors
selected for publication are not paid for their work. However, they get a complimentary copy of the
journal in which their work is published when available.
Copyright
Writers and artists retain the
copyright to their material. By
submitting work, they agree to assign to The
Awakenings Review one-time rights for publication.
Certification
of Authenticity
The AR requires that all accepted authors and artists sign a
certification of originality to warrant the work they submitted is theirs and
does not infringe on an existing copyright, legal contract, or the privacy
rights of others.
