Latest and Greatest Awakenings Review
Literature

The Awakenings Review is published by the Awakenings Project, a coalition of artists and writers who live with psychiatric illnesses. Begun in cooperation with the University of Chicago in 2000, The Awakenings Review has published seven issues thus far. The AR has been acclaimed internationally and draws writers from all over the U.S. and from several foreign countries including Israel, South Africa, Australia, Finland, Switzerland, the U.K. and Canada.

About 10% of all the submissions we receive actually make it into the review, making it a relatively competitive journal in which to be published. We have had special issues in the past: one for writers with depression and manic-depression, another for writers with schizophrenia-related disorders. A writer for The Awakenings Review need not have a mental illness--we do open submissions to family members and friends of people with mental illness--we prefer that a writer have a mental illness of some type, and be willing to write about it, but that does not have to be the focus of the writings either, especially in a general issue.
